A Work in Progress

Sometimes as Christians, even when we are walking closely with Jesus, spending time with God in Bible reading and prayer, it can feel like we are not getting anywhere. It can feel like we are not growing or changing, we are not becoming more like Jesus.
We can find ourselves feeling discouraged and like we are wasting our time. We may even feel like God has given up on us, like we're a lost cause.
Paul writes this in a letter he wrote to some friends in the city of Philippi...

"...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:6 NIV)

"There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears." (Philippians 1:6 The Message)

So guys, how does it feel to know that God Himself is going to carry on the good work He began in you?
What do you think it means that He is going to bring it to flourishing finish on the day that Jesus Christ appears?
How can you let this verse impact the way you live this week?

Love you guys,
Know Jesus and make Him known
Mike

not happy Jan..

Sad to say folks, but it looks like the rain may have washed our lovely photo hunt down the drain. Boo hoo, boo hoo. On top of this, the main hall at VACC is being set up tonight for a wedding tomorrow. However, do not despair and do not stay at home. We have a pretty cool chill out night in the works as I speak. So put that smile back on your dial. The photo hunt will reappear in term 3.
So, the details for tonight are as they were except for the whole catching a train into Southbank to take funny photos bit... Still come at 7pm and get picked up at 10pm, we'll be hanging out at the church and bring a few dollars with you.
If you are the owner of an XBox or PS2 bring it along.
See ya tonight
Know Jesus and make Him known

The Photo Hunt is here, at last

We are invading Southbank this Friday. Our mission is that we will be split into small teams, and you will be briefed when we disembark as to what you wil be photographing. Some of the photos will be hard to take, and may seem insane, but it is far worth it. You will need to arrive at VACC, ready TO LEAVE AT 7PM, with change for the train, as there are only vending machines at the station. We will leave to walk to the train station at 7pm, and heading in. It is $2.90 return for a student ticket, so be sure to bring a student card, or it's really expensive eh.
Bring any other money you want to spend on food, drinks, and other markety trinkets, but in no circumstances bird whistles, just ask my mate in the photo there. Do not attempt to leave a comment on this post, there's no link, try the last one. Cyas!

Bright lights in a dark world

Living in a city, we do not often get to be outside and experience real darkness. In Jesus' time, there was no electricity, no street lamps, no flood lights, none of that. The only light people had at night was from small ceramic oil lamps, fires and burning torches. Between towns there was nothing to light the way except what the stars and moon had to offer. So, as the only source of light for maybe 20km, a town at night time would really stand out. It would grab your attention, you couldn't miss it.

One day when Jesus was speaking about what it meant to live as members of the Kingdom of God he said...

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (Matt 5:14-16 NIV)

"Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand--shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven." (Matt 5:14-16 The Message)

What does it mean for you to be a light in a dark world?
How do you feel about Jesus telling you that you are the light of the world?
Do you ever feel like you are hiding your light or like you want to hide your light?
In what ways do we shine our light in our schools, our families and with our friends?

Don't be shy. Leave a comment.
Remember there is no One80 or Sunday night church this week becase of the church camp.
Know Jesus and make Him known.

THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST

Jesus was always having run-ins with the religious leaders of his time. These guys were powerful guys. They were the social elite, the celebrities of their community, they had substantial political influence and they dictated how people were to encounter God. Jesus came along, however, and he questioned the way they lived, what they taught and the extra rules they had set up from themselves and other people, rules that God had never intended. So, the religious leaders were always trying to trap and trick Jesus in what he said. They were always testing him to see if he would say anything that would prove that he wasn't from God.
One day one of these religious leaders starts questioning Jesus and asks him, "What is the most important commandment God has ever given us."

Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matt 22:37-40 NIV)

Jesus said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.' This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: 'Love others as well as you love yourself.' These two commands are pegs; everything in God's Law and the Prophets hangs from them." (Matt 22:37-40 The Message)

One80ers, what do you think these 2 commandments actually mean? And, what do you think it means to live them out in our day-to-day lives?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYBODY!

Ok next friday is...lemme check...THE BIG BIRTHDAY!
Ok so it doesn't cost anything on Friday, but the idea is that you buy a present, under $5, for someone of the same sex as you. Oh, and apparantly you have to wrap it (yes, newspaper is fine).

You see, the idea is that since we can't celebrate everyone's birthdays seperately, we have the big birthday, and celebrate everyone's together! yay!

Ok, so let me get my facts all straight- 7.30pm-10pm, at VACC, and bring a pressie.
(i gotta do a review incase I left anything out. Why do I always do these when I'm tired?!)

Oh VACC camp is on on the following week, Friday the 17th till Sunday 19th, so there's no one80, but if you wanna go to camp see Mike, or ask Kaleb cos his parents are in charge i think, or get a form at the church door, or if you want 5 reasons to go, ask me (now, i THINK i'm going this year)
